Greek Wines

The Greeks have been making wine for more than 3000 years. Yet outside of a few restaurants they are hard to find. Stop by the shop this Saturday. We will be starting out the New Year with a great selection of wines that show off the diversity of Greek winemaking. From grapes such as Assyrtiko, Athiri and Agiorgitiko as well as more cosmopolitan varietals, these wines are all full, rich, smooth and distinctly Greek.

2008 Sigalas Santorini $18.25
75% Assyrtiko and 25% Athiri-- two native Greek varietals from 50 year old vines that grow on fragments of black lava, volcanic ash and pumice on the Aegean island of Santorini. The wine is straw blonde, with a bright nose of ripe citrus fruit. The body is dry, full and layered with herbal and mineral notes, refreshing acidity and a delightful after-taste.

2008 Domaine Skouras, Nemea, Red $10
A Dijon trained oenologist, George Skouras returned to his native land in 1986 and started his winery at Pyrghela, a small village just outside Argos. The Red is a blend of 95% Agiorgitiko, (Saint George), and 5% Cabernet. Made in a mix of 30% carbonic maceration (Beaujolais style with whole grapes), and 70% classic vinification with short skin contact 3-4 days. The wine is purple with exquisite cherry and mulberry bouquet full bodied with good fruit and Nemean finesse. It is a great everyday drinking wine.

2007 Domaine Skouras, Nemea, St George $14.30
100% Agiorgitiko, (Saint George) planted in clay-sandy soils in Nemea at an altitude of 500-600 meters. It is aged in neutral Alliers barrels for 12 months, followed by 6 months in bottle before release. The wine is dark, full bodied. Wine & Spirits Magazine describes it as At first all chocolate, this turns toward mocha, then a red raspberry freshness builds as the wine parses out its rich flavors. It's polished and elegant yet succulent and juicy, a modern agiorgitiko that hasn't lost its soul.

2003 Nico Lazaridis, The Mackedon $16
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot.
From the foothills of Mount Pangeon in Macedonia close to the Aegean coast, this Grecian take on a Bordeaux blend is full and fruity with notes of small wild berries with well rounded tannins.

Samos, Vin Doux $17.50
From the island of Samos, the Vin Doux is a sweet Muscat wine made from extra ripe Moschato grapes. The wine is golden with a bouquet of honey, apricot, honeysuckle and citrus fruit. The palate is tangy and packed with citrus flavors that linger on the tongue.
