Vino Italiano

This Saturday we have a great selection of wines from Veneto, Abruzzo and the Molise.  The wines run the gamut from a crisp sparkler to some full bodied reds.  All are great wines at good prices, but don't take our word for it.  Come try them for yourself!

Zardetto Prosecco, Cuvee Brut   $10
100% Prosecco from selected vineyards around the hills of Conegliano in the Veneto, the Zardetto is fresh, with a hearty white froth and a fine perlage. Fragrant aromas of peach, citrus and tropical fruits rise off the bubbles and follow throughout the palate. Extremely versatile and fun anytime.

2008 Di Majo Norante, Sangiovese IGT, Terre degli Osci $10
100% Sangiovese
Di Majo Norante have been growing grapes since the 1800s in the region of Molise, on the Adriatic Sea between Puglia and Abruzzo, Their Sangiovesse is aged in a combination of stainless steel tanks and large oak barrels for six months to achieve greater smoothness and softness while preserving the supple fruity flavors of grape. The wine shows a fresh bouquet of violets, woodland berries, spices and leather. It's deliciously smooth, plush and juicy on the palate with loads of ripe fruit. The Wine Advocate gave the wine 90pts, and marked it an incredible value, but don't hold that against it.

2006 Valle Reale, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC $18
100% Montepulciano d'Abruzzo
At 1,000 feet above sea level, Valle Reale's vineyards are nestled into one of Italy's most beautiful national parks. This rich 100% Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is made from the oldest estate vineyard, planted in 1975 on soils rich in chalk, clay and pebbles. Harvested by hand, the grapes are then pressed and macerated with the skins for 10 to 12 days for concentration and structure. After fermentation the wine is matured for one more year in French barriques and then refined in bottle for another eight months before release. The Valle Reale is surprisingly concentrated, rich and aromatic with silky tannins and layers of dark berry fruit and spices, full-bodied and firm, yet supple. It tastes so good it makes the commas run away with themselves.

2006 Allegrini, Palazzo della Torre, IGT Veronese $20
70% Corvina Veronese, 25% Rondinella and 5% Sangiovese
From a 34 year old vineyard in the Veneto, this smooth, full-bodied cru is made in an innovative ripasso style. After the harvest, the grapes from the Palazzo della Torre vineyard follow two different paths: 70% of the grapes picked are vinified immediately, and the remaining 30% are left to dry until the end of December. The fresh juice obtained at harvest is blended with the juice for the dried grapes, initiating a second fermentation, and rendering a more highly concentrated and complex wine. The wine spends 15 months in 1 year old French barrels, and 7 months in bottle before it is released. What Allegrini affectionately refers to as their "baby Amarone" is more approachable with its pleasant fruity character with raisin like qualities.
