Vins de France

This Saturday at European Vine we will be tasting a great line up of French wines from family run wineries.  All these wines are made with a concern for the land, either sustainably farmed, organic, or following biodynamic practices.  And to top it off they taste wonderful.  Come try them.

2008 Domaine de la Ballade, Cote de Gascogne  $9

70% Sauvignon Blanc, 30% Colombard
Domaine de la Ballade located in Gascony has been owned by the Morel Family since 1927, with the current father and son team carrying out the work on vines and the vinification.  The wine is fresh and lively with an incredible balance between minerality and acidity. The nose is fresh with fragrances of lemon curd and white flowers. Its flavor is dominated by shimmering creamy citrus notes, crisp acidity and a cleansing finish.

2008 Domaine Des Gerbeaux, Macon Village $14

100% Chardonnay
Domaine Des Gerbeaux farms organically following traditional methods. Harvests are done by hand in small lots.  The wine is very fruity, refreshing, and elegant. This very French Chardonnay goes great with appetizers, salads, and while it may be too early to start thinking about it, is a great Thanksgiving wine.

2007 Domaine de Chateaumar, Cote du Rhone Cuvee Bastien $13

100% single vineyard old vine Grenache
Another father and son team, Jean-Felix and Frederic Souret manage their vineyard without any chemical weed killers and practicing  sustainable farming techniques.  The grapes are hand picked; selected and sorted with great care. The vinification is carried out over more than 15 days. A declassified Chateauneuf du Pape, the wine is a deep, nearly opaque purple, bringing confident aromas of raspberry, strawberry and blackberry to the nose, with eucalyptus, black pepper, licorice and floral notes. Touches of cinnamon and spice follow onto the medium to full-bodied juicy palate.

2006 Clos Cristal, Saumur Champigny $21

40 year old Cabernet Franc.
The founder of Clos Cristal built about 2 miles of stone walls along which, and through which, he planted his vines. Close to the walls, the vine takes advantage of the heat accumulated by the stone, which enables a greater level of ripeness in the fruit.  The vineyards are certified organic.  The vinification is carried out to emphasize the natural qualities of the grapes; no yeast, sugar, chemical products or regulation of temperature is used so that the process remains as natural as possible.   The wine has silky smooth tannin lots of dark fruit and a note of leather.

2005 Château Capion, Coteaux du Languedoc, 2C $25

60% Syrah, 30% Grenache and 10% Mourvèdre from 30+ years old vines.
Château Capion, nestled in the Gassac valley between the villages of Gignac and Aniane, dates back to the 16th century.  The estate is certified organic, uses no irrigation and maintains low yields.  The wine is aged for 12 months in new French oak barrels. The wine is robust, full-bodied red with lively flavors of spice, raspberry and crushed red fruits. Notes of hazelnuts and vanilla linger on the bright finish
