Rhone Reds & one Pink

Stop by Saturday and try some Rhone wines, all from family run estates in France.  Cotes du Rhone reds are some of the most versatile food wines there are.  Grenache and Syrah are the main players in these wines, although little additions of such grapes as Mouvedre, Carignan, and Cinsult make a distinct difference.  In the blend, like many things in life, proportion and balance are everything.  Come taste the difference.  To warm up with we have a rose, from father down the Rhone River in Languedoc, made with the same varietals.

2008 Domaine de l'Hortus, Rose $15

An equal blend of  Syrah, Grenache and Mouvedre.

Jean Orliac and his wife Marie-Therese bought 50 hectares of abandoned scrubland in the valley between the Pic and Montagne d'Hortus, planting each grape variety carefully selected to complement its terroir - Syrah on the cooler slopes of Pic Saint Loup, Grenache below and Mourvedre on the warmer Montagne d'Hortus.  The Domaine de l'Hortus rose possesses good acidity and dry crisp fruit, with hints of strawberry and violets and is perfectly refreshing in warm weather.

2006 Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils, Panorama Rouge $10

80% Merlot, 20% Grenache

Frances Usseglio came form Italy in 1931 to work in Chateauneuf du Pape as a vineyard worker.  In 1949 he produced his first wine from share cropped vines.  After him, his son Pierre purchased and expanded the vineyards.  Today, Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils is a notable Chateauneuf du Pape producer.  They also make this unorthodox red vin de pays.  Give it a try.

2007 Domaine Lafond Roc Epine, Cotes du Rhone, $14

70% Grenache, 30% Syrah

From a family run vineyard started in 1880 just after the phylloxera crisis, the Lafond CDR is full of  deep red fruit and dark berry flavors with hints of herbs and spice.  The wine has good structure and smooth tannins.

2007 Domaine Boisson, Cotes du Rhone  $14

60% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Carignan, 5% Cinsult, and 5% Mouvedre

From a father and son team in the in the village of Cairanne., the Boisson is aged in cement tanks, highlighting the complexity of the grapes.  The wine has aromatics of wild strawberries and raspberries intermixed with tar, underbrush and garrigue aromas,  and a medium body that's soft, textured.

2005 Chateau de Montmirail,Vacqueyras, Cuvee des Deux Freres,  $25

80% Grenache, 20% Syrah.

Chateau de Montmirail owns more vines in and around the villages of Gigondas and Vacqueyras than anyone else. The average age of the vines is over 40 years old, and although they sell a fair amount of their production off on the bulk market, they keep the best stuff for their own label.  This family-owned estate, which passed from father to daughter and is now run with obvious enthusiasm by Monique Bouteiller and her son, Phillipe.  This domaine's classic blend using primarily Grenache is rich and earthy showing red fruit in the nose and ripe, dusty tannins.
