| Join us on Saturday to try a new selection of wine from Spain -- some modern, some traditional, all distinctly Spanish. Spanish winemakers today are producing a wide variety of tasty reasonably priced wines and we are drinking it up. Saturdays tasting features such indigenous grapes as Verdejo, Monastrell and Tempranillo. It also shows what can be done when those classic grapes are blended with Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah. Come check it out. |
| 2007 Bodegas Protos, Verdejo, Rueda $11 |
| The Protos Verdejo is well-rounded with the perfect balance of acidity. It is full of citrus and tropical fruits flavors that dance on the tongue ending with a good dry finish. Great with all sorts of fish, pasta, salads and cheeses. |
| 2007 Bodegas Ucenda, Monastrell, Jumilla $8 |
100% Monastrell |
| 2007 Bodegas San Pedro Apostol, Campellares, Rioja $12 |
| Sourced from 40 year old vines in Rioja Alta this Tempranillo, a traditional style Rioja, looks more for finesse than brawn. The wine has a good fruity nose with notes of raspberries and baking spices. The Campellares is full of good fruit flavors and a smooth finish. |

2006 D'Este Vino, El Molinet Valencia $15 |
| 77% Tempranillo and 23% Cabernet Sauvignon The El Molinet comes from Tempranillo planted 300 to nearly 900 meters above sea level, at these high altitudes, the Tempranillo ripens slowly developing a tremendous aromatic character. It is co-fermented with the Cabernet in stainless steel tanks and aged 6 months in oak barrels prior to being bottled unfiltered. Stephen Tanzer describes the wine as: Ruby-red. Jammy blackberry and blueberry aromas are deepened by tobacco and black cardamom. Bitter cherry, espresso and chocolate flavors offer good depth and supporting structure, picking up resiny herbs with air. Youthfully stern but there's impressive dark fruit here. Hard to beat that. |
| 2001 Bodegas Masies D'Avinyo, Abadal Reserva, Pla de Bages $25 |
| 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet and 10% Syrah Pla de Bages, one of the oldest vine growing regions in the world, is named for Bacchus the god of wine. The vines are cultivated on structured terraces that get little rainfall. This leads to highly structured wines with freshness and delicacy. Here Masies D'Avinyo planted Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah. The different grapes are fermented separately with Syrah spending 10 days on skins and Merlot and Cabernet 12 days. No press wine is used in the blend. The Wine Advocate describes the Abdal Reserva as: This purple-colored wine coats the glass with glycerin. It offers up an impressive bouquet of vanilla, spice box, pencil lead, and black currants which have benefited from the extra bottle age. It is the most densely packed to this point, with layers of black fruit flavors, a supple texture, and surprising elegance. It has excellent balance and a long, fruity finish. Drink it over the next 4-6 years. 90pts |
2006 Bodegas Bernabe Navarro, Beryna Crianza, Alacante $25 |
| The Beryna Crianza is 60% Monastrell with the balance made up of Cabernet, Syrah, Tempranillo and Merlot. The winery owns 40 hectares of vineyards in western Alicante. The grapes are harvested in small boxes with only the best bunches are selected. The wine has notes of smoky berry on the nose, with layers of full bodied fruit flavors blended with fine textured tannins and a long finish. We think you'll like it. |
