Come by the shop this Saturday when we will be showing some great wines from Veneto, Lombardy and Piedmont. The hills and terraced mountains of Northern Italy are magnificent for growing rich and complex grapes in wide variety. We'll be pouring a pleasing Prosecco, a classic Barbera, both a white and a red Nebbiolo and, of course, a Wildbacher (what tasting would be complete without one?) Gianpietro Ottolini will be on hand to talk about the wines.
San Feletto Prosecco Treviso DOC"Le Guizze", $12
San Feletto, located in the heart of the Conegliano and the Valdobbiadene, is a family-owned and operated estate founded at the beginning of the 1900s that make their wine mostly from estate-grown fruit. The grapes are hand-picked in small boxes to preserve the richness and elegance of the fruit. The extended second fermentation gives the Prosecco a fine perlage and creamy froth. The sweetness is between a Brut and an Extra-Dry. The Le Guizze has an abundant floral and apple bouquet, with hints of bread crust and subtle nutty undertones.
2008 Nera "La Novella" Chiavennasca Bianco $ 15
From this family run winery in the Valtalina in Lombardy, the La Novella is made from 88% Nebbiolo and 12% old vine Chardonnay, the juice from the Nebbiolo being pressed off before it picks up any color from the skins. The wine has lots of spring flowers and herbs on the bouquet, with subtle red fruit undertones, dry citrus flavor and mineral notes. .
2006 Cave di Moleto, Barbera del Monferrato $ 12
Cave di Moleto is located in a picturesque hamlet in the heart of Monferrato. It is a peaceful spot, with only 12 registered residents, and 50 acres of vineyards surrounding it. Barbera is the prime variety here, with the best land given to its cultivation. Cave refers both for the limestone quarry, from which people used to extract the stone, and the myriad of tunnels excavated by the Saracens hundreds years ago, and used today to store the wines. The wine is produced with fruit from three different estate vineyards with guyot trained vines. It's produced in stainless steel tanks so no oak flavors to mask the fruit. The Moleto has a deep ruby color and offers intense flavors of blackberry, licorice, plum, leather, forest floor and subtle spice.
2004 Nera Inferno $18
The Inferno is all Nebbiolo (locally called Chiavennasca) grown on steep terraced slopes in Valtellina just South of the Italian/Swiss Alps. The vineyards range between 1200 and 1600 feet where the grapes benefit from longer sun exposure and higher temperature excursions. The wineshows more elegance than its cousins from Piemonte, yet the same aromatic profile of rose, violet, leather, cherry and subtle bramble fruit. It shows soft tannins and lively acidity, with a fruity and slightly bitter note on the finish.
2004 Tenuta Col Sandago Colli Trevigiani IGT Wildbacher $ 27
The Tenuta Col Sandago is 100% Wildbacher. Wildbacher is a very old dark-skinned grape variety originally from Styria, Austria that was transplanted centuries ago to Veneto. The vine has a fierce resistance to frost and phylloxera. It has survived the infamous frost of 1709 and the phylloxera devastation of the late 1800s. However, the yields are extremely low, which is why this variety was near extinction in the mid 1900s, a period when the mass production ruled the wine industry. Tenuta Col Sandago is the first contemporary winery to produce a 100% Wildbacher. The wine is aged for 20 months in barrel plus 6 months in bottle before release. It has aromas of small red berries and spices and herbal notes, The body is full with robust tannins and good acidity and a strong personality. It is truly unique and one of a kind. Don't miss it.
